Prof. Dr. Kazi Shamim Sultana

Professor Dr. Kazi Shamim Sultana was born in Feni, Bangladesh, in 1963. Her father, Justice Kazi Ebadul Hoque (Ekushey Padak awardee, 2016), was a Justice in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Appellate Division. Her mother, Professor Dr. Sharifa Khatun (Ekushey Padak awardee, 2017), is a retired professor and former Director of the Institute of Education and Research (IER), at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Education
Professor Sultana obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Dhaka. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Physics (The Cavendish Laboratory) at the University of Cambridge, UK. Her Ph.D. dissertation is entitled “Analysis of Helium Scattering from Stepped and Growing Surfaces.” This work specializes in the fundamental theoretical studies of surface structures by mapping surface potentials and surface dynamics using helium atom scattering.

Awards and Scholarships
She was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship for full-time doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge (01-10-1991 to 30-09-1994). She also enjoyed several other scholarships during her studies at the Cavendish Laboratory namely: The Charles Wallace Bangladesh Trust, Cavendish Laboratory, Clare Hall, and Board of Graduate Studies. She was awarded the Raja Kali Narayan Scholarship, Salequn Nesa Gold Medal, S. Rahman Foundation Scholarship, Diamond Jubilee Foundation Scholarship, and Bangladesh University Grants Commission Scholarship for academic excellence.

Career
Professor Sultana was a Research Fellow at the Bose Center, University of Dhaka after her graduation. She joined the Department of Physics, University of Chittagong, as a lecturer in 1990. She was appointed as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Premier University, Chattogram on March 20, 2022.

Research and Publications
Professor Sultana has presented research papers and posters at international conferences held by the Bangladesh Physical Society in Dhaka, and various conferences on Surface Science held by the University of Cambridge, University of Warwick and at the 14th European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS-1), at the University of Leipzig, Germany. She also participated in Summer Schools and Workshops on Surface Science organized by the University of Cambridge.

She has published 13 research articles in reputed journals.

Professor Sultana is a member of the following organizations:

Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, UK.

Life Member, Clare Hall, Cambridge, UK.

Life Member of Bangladesh Physical Society.

As a member and General Secretary of Bangladesh Cambridge University Society, she organized programs to celebrate national days and festivals of Bangladesh during her stay in Cambridge.
